PICK A SHEEN

Eggshell, Satin or other low-luster finishes, tend to be versatile and durable particularly for families and high traffic spaces.

Flat is my go to for very contemporary or modern spaces. It also hides a multitude of sins, so I like to go flat on the ceiling because most ceilings are not perfectly smooth. However, buyer beware… it is difficult to clean.

High Gloss is for the glam! Go dramatic and paint it on walls but I recommend hiring the pros for this one, as it’s really hard to hide a poor paint job. If you aren’t ready to go full on, use high gloss to highlight details such as trim and moldings.

think clean

I prefer to use low or Zero VOC paints that are “certified allergy and asthma friendly”. When we paint interiors, we are inevitably introducing some harmful substances into the home, so I try get the cleanest options out there.

To be clear, a Zero VOC paint unfortunately does not mean that there are zero VOCs in the formula. Rather, the level of VOCs in the paint falls below the government regulated amount permissible.

Low and Zero VOC options tend to be more expensive and require more coats upon application. Nonetheless, it is not an area where I like to compromise. When you walk in and are overcome with that “ freshly painted” room smell, you are inhaling VOCs likely including fungicides, formaldehyde, ethylene glycol, and benzene.

No thanks! I’ll pass.
